AWA

Amherst Writers and Artists was formed in 1981 by American Pat Schneider as a non-critique based methodology. This is a gentle, non-confrontational group that workshops weekly and aims to help writers and poets to find their own unique voice.

From the AWA website “…equally effective in helping those whose voices have traditionally been silenced by poverty, discrimination, illness, age or other obstacles to achieving the powerful combination of language and confidence needed to overcome social barriers.” More here at http://www.amherstwriters.com/index.html

A Singapore branch of the group is led by Himal Ruparel and meets on Mondays at the Peninsula Shopping Complex on Coleman St. Himal attended the training courses in the USA in order to become an AWA  moderator.

Each workshop is considered sacred. Discussions held within the group remain within the group so that trust and respect for the individuals work can be built, allowing each writer the space to allow their creative walls to be brought down.

Participants are encouraged to keep a journal for however long they remain with the group.

Members are expected to attend on a very regular basis and commit long term to the group.
